Oliver's Twist
Jamie Oliver is 100% correct. This country is in need of a "Food Revolution"! By now I would love to think that most everyone has heard of Jamie Oliver, the British chef, TV personality, and author who is on a major campaign to change the way America eats. His new show on ABC is called "Jamie's Food Revolution" and I think he's on the right track. It's on Friday nights, which is why I DVR it, because many of us are out kickin' it, disco dancing, and whatnot, making it hard to be home watching TV. Please check it out and if his views are similar to yours, please support him. All he wants to do is help.
I started watching his show "The Naked Chef" when it first came on several years ago and loved it. His approach to food is practically a mirror image of my own. He's all about simple preparations that just plain taste good. There really no use of fancy ingredients or technical applications that must be mastered for a recipe to work. I have all of his cookbooks and refer to them nearly more than any of the others. I will say he uses more chilies and ginger than are usually seen in your average American kitchen, which is kinda cool because it makes flavors of your food jump off the plate, plus they're really cheap. He puts together many everyday ingredients in such a way, it feels like it's something totally new.
These are fun cookbooks for the experienced cook and a FANTASTIC resource for the novice. The recipes really work well and come together quickly, making it look like you've been a chef for years. He's really an inspiration because all he wants is for people to get in the kitchen "fired with enthusiam and confidence".

I took inspiration from Jamie Oliver last night and made mahi mahi with spicy asian green beans. Used lots of ginger and hot pepper flakes, amongst other things. Delicious, nutritious, and took only about 25 minutes start to finish. I sent the recipe to Kelly. The only change I will make next time is to double the sauce I put on the green beans so I have a little extra to drizzle over the fish.
ReplyDeleteLOVE Jamie AND his Food Revolution! Can you believe those folks who want him out of town?
ReplyDeleteI am not so in love with the Revolution book though. Some of the recipes I found to be somewhat too British for my So. Cal palate. I read it (cover to cover of course!) and then passed it along to my friend who is a UK transplant. She was thrilled with the book as it is full of (what she considers) comfort foods. Hopefully she will be willing to invite me for a tasting. Lord knows I have supplied her with some tasty guacamole from my own back yard on occasion.
